Irish Roadtrip pt. 6 | County Sligo
Part six of my Ultimate Coastal Irish Roadtrip navigates the quiet countryside of County Sligo. The area has plenty of lesser-known trails, glacier-shaped landscapes, and unassuming coastlines that slip gently into the ocean. Don’t be surprised if you see more sheep than people in this part of Ireland… in fact, I guarantee that you will!
Keshcorran Caves
Drive time Downpatrick Head to Keshcorran Caves: 1.5 hours
Approximate time there: 1.5-2 hours
In County Sligo are the Keshcorran Caves, a series of sixteen limestone caves found on the side of Keshcorran Hill. The path leads up to the caves through some private farmland and woods. Expect the walk to take about 45 minutes each way, plus time exploring the cave network. Note that dogs are not allowed on the private land that this path is on.
The Glen Path
Drive time Keshcorran Caves to The Glen: 30 minutes
Approximate time there: 1.5 hours
Even more off the beaten path than the Keshcorran Caves, The Glen Path is a little hard to find, but the path itself has a whimsical beauty to it that feels straight out of a storybook. The out-and-back path is a quiet and enjoyable trail, it even has a rope swing for those of you who want to tap into their inner child for a moment!
To find the entry point, use this location on Google Maps. You will notice a well on the one side of the road if you’re paying attention; the trail head is just across from it.
There is no real end or turnaround point, so head back when the brush gets too thick, and there’s no obvious path to follow anymore!
Ben Bulben
Drive time The Glen to Ben Bulben: 30 minutes
Approximate time there: 2 hours
This flat top mountain dominates the landscape of the area in County Sligo. Choose a hike or walking path and take in the beauty of its unique form, courtesy of glaciers during the ice age. There are a few paths in the area to choose from; we opted to visit the Devil’s Chimney, a gorgeous waterfall nestled in the woods, and the casual Ben Bulben Forest Walk.
Gleniff Horseshoe
Drive time Ben Bulben to Gleniff Horseshoe: 20 minutes
Approximate time there: 45 minutes
The Horse Shoe is a short loop road with some breathtaking views. If you're coming from Ben Bulben, skip the first access road, cross the bridge and turn on the second entry point, just past the Gleniff Coffee Kart. This route will have you following the road clockwise, giving you the best views as you approach the Horseshoe.
Mullaghmore Head
Drive time Gleniff Horseshoe to Mullaghmore Head: 20 minutes
Approximate time there: 30 minutes
Known as a popular surfing destination in Ireland, the scenic spot is a quick drive-by stop for most. Unlike the cliffs that command most of the Irish coastline, here the rocky terrain gently fades into the water.
