Altitude, ancient wonders, and more stairs than your quads ever asked for.

Peru — especially Machu Picchu — had been on my bucket list for years. So when my mom mentioned she, my aunt, uncle, and a few friends were planning a five-day trek to the ancient city, I immediately asked if I could tag along (read: invited myself). And I’m so glad I did. Between altitude sickness, bug bites, and pushing ourselves to hike up to 25 km in a day in crazy altitudes, it was one of the most physically demanding things I’ve ever done. It was also one of the most rewarding. I’d go again in an instant.

Pro-ish Tips for Peru

• Soles are the currency.
You’ll want cash on hand if you’re heading into the mountains for bathrooms, tipping guides, or buying snacks in remote areas. Bring some small coins, because they won’t be making change!

• Try the local flavours.
Llama and guinea pig (cuy) are both traditional delicacies.

• Explore Cusco on foot.
Free walking tours are an awesome way to learn the city’s history, meet other travellers, and get oriented before you dive into higher-altitude adventures.

Do what you can to avoid altitude sickness.
It sneaks up fast and hits harder than expected. Take time to acclimatize before any big hikes, drink coca tea, stay hydrated, and limit the pisco sours for the first few days.
