There’s no denying the US is one of the most staggeringly diverse places on Earth — in both landscape and ideology. From the mountain peaks to cities that never sleep, and everything in between, it kind of feels like ten countries stitched into one. And, maybe because of that diversity, it’s complicated.
I’ve camped beneath the pines of the Adirondacks, explored the wildness of NYC on multiple trips (three? four?), devoured juicy burgers on a desert Texan road, and chased childhood nostalgia through the magic of Disney.. The West Coast? Still calling my name.
But if I’m being honest, and I always try to be, it’s not a country I can wholeheartedly recommend right now. The political climate is heavy, the divisions sharp, and as a generally liberal-minded (and basic human rights loving) traveller, it often leaves me uneasy. That said, the natural beauty is undeniable, and for those choosing to explore it, there’s still so much wonder to be found.
Pro-ish Tips for
the USA
• Plan Your Vibe
Are you chasing misty mountains and national parks? Or is it rooftop bars and late nights you’re after? The US has it all, but not always in the same area.
• Tipping is a thing.
Like, a serious thing. 15–20% is expected in service jobs. It might feel strange if you’re not used to it, but just like you’d take your shoes off in a temple or cover your shoulders in a church, tipping is expected.
• Apple Pay = Yes. Tap Cards = Sometimes?
Apple Pay is widely accepted, especially in cities. But not all terminals accept tap-to-pay cards.
• LGBTQ+ and BIPOC Travellers — Stay Safe
I wish this didn’t need to be said, but here we are. The US is a patchwork of political ideologies, and not all are kind. Be mindful of what colour county you're in (red vs. blue) and trust your gut. That said, there are so many regions full of love, celebration, and radical joy — those are worth finding. 🏳️🌈🖤
