King’s Landing Self-Guided Tour of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik was used as the set of King’s Landing in the HBO series, Game of Thrones. There are walking tours where you can be shown the spots throughout the city… or you can follow this guide and go at your own pace for free!

If you’re planning to spend a couple of days in Dubrovnik, mix these GoT stops in with other city sights for a full day-adventure — check out this full Dubrovnik Guide for more — or power through everything in an hour entirely dedicated to the show.

Be warned! This post contains spoilers for the series. If you haven’t hopped on the bandwagon by now, proceed with caution!

Looking out over King’s Landing

Disclaimer: This post is based on my personal experience. Always double-check information and do your own research before travelling. Any locations or activities marked with an asterisk (*) are ones I haven’t personally visited yet, but they’re on my list for next time based on recommendations I trust.

1) Gradac Park

If you were as happy as I was when Joffrey finally died at the Purple Wedding, you should be excited to visit the spot where it happened at Gradac Park.

2) Fort Lovrijenac

Though a lot of embellishment was done with Hollywood magic, Fort Lovrijenac was used as the exterior of the Red Keep.

3) Dubrovnik West Harbour and Pier

Used for the scenes of Blackwater Bay, you might recognize the location from the attempted assassination of Gendry by the Red Cloaks, as well as the conversation between Sansa and Littlefinger as they plan her escape from King’s Landing.

4) Kolorina/Pile Bay

Also used for Blackwater Bay, but more specifically, the Battle of Blackwater Bay, in which Tyrion receives his scar and the Wildfire decimates Stannis Baratheon’s fleet.

5) Pile Gate

The main entrance to Old Town Dubrovnik was used as the entry to the Red Keep, most notably right after Myrcella is sent to Dorne, and again when Jamie finally makes it home, missing a hand.

6) Rupe Ethnographic Museum

Seen a few times throughout the series as the entry to Littlefinger’s Brothel. The most memorable use of the site is perhaps when the High Septon is dragged out by the Sparrows.

7) Jesuit Staircase

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME! Likely the most recognizable scene of King’s Landing – if not the entire series – is the staircase on which Cersei begins her long Walk of Shame back to the Red Keep. The ornate steps dominate the view from the square below.

8) St Dominic Street

The hard-to-miss, rounded staircase near the Dominican Monastery is used in many scenes throughout the series. Significant moments would be during the Walk of Shame, while onlookers shout at Cersei, as well as a scene where the Red Cloaks kill one of the Baratheon bastards.

9) Polce Gate

Also used during the Walk of Shame, Cersei crosses a bridge as she approaches the Red Keep; this is that bridge. The shot can be seen best from the road along the outside of the city, here.

10) Minceta Tower

If you’ve decided to pay to walk the city walls, make sure to stop at Minceta Tower on the northeast corner. This was used as the exterior for the House of the Undying in Qarth, shown in the series when Daenerys and Jorah are trying to get her dragons back.

Bonus - Lokrum Island*

Catch a boat across from the mainland over to Lokrum Island, just 600 metres away. Here is where the assassination attempt against Daenerys in Qarth was filmed.

Hope you enjoy nerding out in King’s Landing — I mean Dubrovnik — as much as I did!
